Christ the King

"They will make war on the Lamb, and the Lamb will conquer them, for he is Lord of lords and King of kings, and those with him are called and chosen and faithful."   - Rev 17: 14 ESV Sometime in the third century during the martyrdom, the early apostles instituted a festival named 'Christ The King' to reaffirm that no matter what their lot may be from any earthly king, Christ their King will console them. This festival was cancelled by the Roman emperor whose mission was to crush Christianity anyway. However, in 1925, Pope Pius XI re-instituted the festival. He connected the increasingly denial of Christ as king to the rise of secularism, and so sought to reestablish the supremacy of Christ over the cosmos. In his words, "The faithful, moreover, by meditating upon these truths, will gain much strength and courage, enabling them to form their lives after the true Christian ideal. If to Christ our Lord is given all power in heaven and on earth; if all men,...

LET'S FACE IT - SQUARELY!

“The white man is very clever. He came quietly and peaceably with his religion. We were amused at his foolishness and allowed him to stay. Now he has won our brothers, and our clan can no longer act like one. He has put a knife on the things that held us together and we have fallen apart.” ― Chinua Achebe, Things Fall Apart “When the missionaries came to Africa they had the Bible and we had the land. They said "Let us pray." We closed our eyes. When we opened them, we had the Bible and they had the land.” ― Desmond Tutu A lot has been written about the balkanization of the Nigerian state by “the white man” in the quest to conquer Africa for his own selfish interests. The role the white man’s Christianity played to catalyse this process is also well documented. Just to cite a few cases, the Church (missionaries and preachers) watched with glee as their white brothers engaged in slave trade, sometimes presenting the Christian God as a supporter of slave trade. The eco...

When God Is Not Enough

In the middle of Lagos- Benin expressway, before the Ore junction, sits a rusty disabled car with a partially burnt-out engine. It has been there for weeks, abandoned by the owner and by the state. There is no light where the car rests, yet thieves have managed to visit at night and extract anything of value in the car. Meanwhile, at their home in FESTAC, a patriarch and his family are preparing to travel to Onitsha. They have packed their luggage and taken them into their Honda Pilot Jeep. They pray for God to grant them safe trip. The parents speak in tongues and the children sing choruses. Their neighbours and friends come out and wish them journey mercies. As they drive, they play gospel music and sing more songs and praises. Near the site where the rusty car rests, the patriarch of the family swings the car to avoid a pothole. By the time he regains control of the car, he is face to face with the disabled car. The last thing that comes out of his mouth before the car slams into th...

A TIME IS COMING | Revival, Revolution

“Despite decades of secularization, not to mention mass immigration, Britain remains at heart a Christian kingdom. Its churches, however, have repeatedly shot themselves in the right foot by embracing fashionable opinions rather than remaining resolute in the face of modernity. If they want to regain their former glory, they should follow Britain's young Christians in going back to old certainties, time-honored traditions and absolute truths.” The above quote is the conclusion of a research work investigating why England’s churches are (fast becoming) empty, published here . There is no doubt that modernism has affected the Christian Church of today in more ways than one; the most obvious being in the areas of entertainment, ostentation, and extreme permissiveness (in no particular order). Entertainment One thing that never fail to amuse me is the fact that whenever a new church is to be set up, one of the first major projects is the acquisition of musical instruments. I ...

Remember That You Are Dust, And To Dust Shall You Return

For nearly a thousand years, these words have been spoken to young and old alike as the sign of the cross is traced on their foreheads with ashes—the Imposition of Ashes, as it has come to be known*. As we mark Ash Wednesday 2014, and as we prepare our hearts for the season, Lent, let us meditate on the theme of the season and draw strength for our “race” to Heaven. Traditionally, this season of Lent provided a time in which converts to the Christian faith were prepared for Holy Baptism. It was also a time when those who, because of notorious sins, had been separated from the body of the faithful were reconciled by penitence and forgiveness, and restored to the fellowship of the Church. Thereby, the whole congregation was put in mind of the message of pardon and absolution set forth in the Gospel of our Saviour, and of the need which all Christians continually have to renew their repentance and faith. The Imposition of Ashes puts forward to us two (2) powerful messages none of whi...

Daddy, My Daddy, Teach Me How To Love

Lovers of the late Jim Reeves’ songs will quickly relate the above lines with one of his titles: Daddy, My Daddy, Teach Me How to Pray. Today, my own cry (and I hope you join me) is for Daddy to teach me how to love. Two incidences that happened recently in my life brought to my face squarely the need for more love. The first was listening to Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, the current Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese (more popularly known by Nigerians as Father Kukah). The second was watching the action (reaction, rather) of my co-passenger in a cab as we were coming back home late one night. I will present both experiences here as I share the powerful lessons they have taught me. The first: Father Kukah, speaking on The Folly of Ethnic Compartmentalization at TEDx Euston veered off a little bit to remind us of what Jesus noted will be the basis of judgement on the Last Day, as recorded in Matthew 25:31-44. He noted that many of us will miss heaven, not so much because of the evils...

The Anatomy of Sin

Sin is like a computer virus. When it gets into a computer(man's life) it appears to do no harm at first, your computer might still run smoothly as if nothing is wrong with it. The problem is soon, it begins to duplicate (more sin) and increase. The more it grows the more damage it causes to the computer and the more difficult it becomes to remove. Soon the computer starts getting slow and frustrating (prayer life and church gets boring) . After sometime the virus finally ends up destroying the computer and makes it totally useless(sin takes the believer back into the world). Which was the goal of the first single virus(sin) that entered the computer in the first place. The same way most computer users today waste time to remove that first virus from their computer immediately through asking God for Forgiveness, regular antiviral scanning (studying God's Word and praying) of their computer and updating of their anti virus (The HolyGhost) until the computer is almost dest...

Thoughts on Generational Curses and Faulty Foundation Issues

I’ve been going through the Book of Genealogies (Genesis) lately. Soon I perceived the need to share some concerns about the whole issue and teachings on Generational Transfer (Transmission, if you like) of Curses and/or Problems. Let me for now agree with findings from natural science that traits can be transferred from parent to offspring – plants and animals alike. After all, this knowledge has been successfully utilized in agriculture and even among humans. Today, we are taught to deal with our “Faulty Foundations.” This ‘dealing’ usually involves series of prayer sessions and vigils; sometimes contracting – yes, contracting – a man of God or a prayer team for family liberation: cutting down evil trees, digging out old juju, announcing some people (usually the old women) as the hands holding the family successes etc. Afterwards the testimonies start rolling in: the ladies in the family who are past the marriage age start getting married, the men in business start to buy cars...

As We Celebrate

AS WE CELEBRATE... Today marks one year of this page’s existence. I deeply appreciate God for the vision, will and opportunity to bring His ever-true Word to friends and friends of ... friends on Facebook; and for sustaining this project up till now. I trust He’ll continue to give the grace. On the other hand, I sincerely appreciate all of you who at some point read one or more of our posts and supplied us feedback. The variety of feedback I've gotten in this past year was ju st overwhelming: Some likes the page itself to get the posts first-hand. Others likes or commented on posts, making their own input towards our corporate edification. Yet there are quite some who went beyond these to call me for further discussions on a post, or to say, “thank you for blessing my life.” Those who did not have my contact sent me a ‘Friend Request’ on Facebook. At this point let me also appreciate my friend-contributors. To Tobe Osigwe, a trained Screen Writer and my high school senior: ...

Te Deum Laudamus

We praise thee, O God : we acknowledge thee to be the Lord. All the earth doth worship thee : the Father everlasting. To thee all Angels cry aloud : the Heavens, and all the Powers therein. To thee Cherubim and Seraphim : continually do cry, Holy, Holy, Holy : Lord God of Sabaoth; Heaven and earth are full of the Majesty : of thy glory. The glorious company of the Apostles : praise thee. The goodly fellowship of the Prophets : praise thee. The noble army of Martyrs : praise thee. The holy Church throughout all the world : doth acknowledge thee; The Father : of an infinite Majesty; Thine honourable, true : and only Son; Also the Holy Ghost : the Comforter. Thou art the King of Glory : O Christ. Thou art the everlasting Son : of the Father. When thou tookest upon thee to deliver man : thou didst not abhor the Virgin's womb. When thou hadst overcome the sharpness of death : thou didst open the Kingdom of Heaven to all believers. Thou sittest at the right hand of God : in t...
