MONEY PALAVER - The Deceitfulness of Riches (The Truth Shall Make You Free (3))

In my interaction with (fellow) young people, I hear things like “why you dey go school, dey read book: no be because of money?” and “Ol’boy, you know how much that guy dey collect (or make) per month?” This suggests to me that we now have (more than ever before) a generation that is seriously deluded by riches, who thinks life is all about money. We have a lot of people who have even abandoned their destined careers or their planned career path just because another career offered them immediate and greater wealth – a temptation Jesus overcame severally (see John 6:15 and Matt.4:8-10). Many today are grossly unsatisfied with their present job but cannot leave because the money they make is much. They know they are not doing what they are supposed to be doing; but they've been trapped by money! The church, sadly, has not helped matters a bit as (worldly) wealth acquisition is celebrated and encouraged in a way that, like the thorns in Jesus’ parable (Matt.13:7,22), effectively ...

INORDINATE EXPECTATIONS (The Truth Shall Make You Free (2))

Many of us today expect some kind of preferential treatment from GOD in this life; probably because we have been born again, or that we have attained a certain level of spirituality, or that we have prayed and fasted, or that we have given ourselves to the LORD in service, or even that we have met a particular scriptural condition. That is why we feel overly disappointed whenever we meet with difficulties in life despite our steadfastness to GOD. Let me state at this point that everything we receive from GOD is by His mercies, never by our effort. It is not of him that wills or runs, but of Him that shows mercy (Rom.9:16). Baruch Baruch was a man like us; a young man setting out in the world. He was well disposed to the things of GOD, and was willing to serve GOD and His prophet, Jeremiah; but, when it came to suffering, he was desirous to be excused. Being an ingenious man, and a scholar, he stood fair for preferment; and now to be driven into a corner, and in danger of a prison,...

THIS ISSUE OF SEED-SOWING (The Truth Shall Make You Free (1))

In several of our churches and prayer-meetings today, Prosperity Messages usually end with a call to sow seed. These “seeds” usually come in different brands – Prophetic Offerings, Commitment, Sacrificial Offering, Seed-of-Faith, Covenant Seed, etc. Worshipers are taught that these “seeds” hold the key to their financial prosperity and protection from ills. Passages like Gen.26:12ff (Isaac sowed in the land…), 1Kings 3:4ff (Solomon’s sacrifice at Gibeon), 2Cor.9:6 (He that sows sparingly…) and the like are usually the base texts. Usually in such meetings, lots of stories of people who got marvelous breakthroughs by sowing seeds are shared; and anyone attempting to question the teaching and the accompanying “Prophetic Action” will be silenced with passages like 2Chr.20:20 (…believe his prophets, and ye shall prosper), Hos.12:13 (by a prophet the LORD brought Israel out of Egypt, and by a prophet was he preserved) and Jn.2:5 (Whatever he says to you, do it.) Such meetings are usuall...

DELUSIONS FROM THE PULPIT | Beware

It is sad and very unfortunate that our society has gone really haywire and that the rate of morality over the last decade has descended to an all-time low. From the regular street-gang armed robbery to the present bold and full-blown kidnapping, and even assassination in some cases; from the regular one-night-stand prostitutes to the 24/7 prostitution by female undergraduate students and desperate ladies at work places; from the normal peaceful protests and threats to the militancy and ‘boko-haramism’ which we now have; from the occasional adultery and second-wife practices to the present-day, and I daresay now-excusable, chains of mistresses and concubines our married men keep – even with their wives’ knowledge; from the frequent fornication with the opposite sex to the brave and mind-numbing acts of sodomy and lesbianism that have now become the order of the day in our society, and the list continues. It has gotten to a point where nobody sees anything wrong with government offic...

"...And You Call Yourself a Christian!"

Is the above clause familiar? Has it ever been said to you? Or have you heard it being said concerning someone? Well, it only shows that people, bad as they are, still expect certain behaviours and lifestyles from professing Christians. Really, nobody is interested in how much you know and can preach the Word of GOD, or how much you can pray and keep vigils, or how frequent you are in church and programmes, or how much visions and prop hecies you give, or how much you can speak in unlearned languages (tongues), or any such thing. Like Jesus pointed out, it is by YOUR FRUIT that you shall be known (Matt. 7:16-20; 12:33). People will not care about the quantity of “manure” or “energy” you put in until they can see the fruit you bear in all its beauty. Everybody is tired of talkers; they want to see men and women who walk their talk. And, truly, it is actions that proves the reality of faith (see James 2:14-17). Basically, people still expect you as a professing Christian to be di...

JOY: Secret to Excelling Academically Despite Busy Schedules

In the first part of this treatise , I shared from personal experience some useful (though trivial-looking) tips that will be of help to all students especially those who combine their academics with other (non-academic) activities. Whereas that first part focused on your approach to your studies, this will focus on your approach to the other non-academic activities you may be involved in. I pray this too will be beneficial to you. Let me say from the onset that as GOD’s dear child, everything you do is seen by GOD as a service to Him; whether you serve in the church, fellowship, department, faculty, family, place of work or your personal business. That is why in several places, the word of GOD encourages us to do our work as unto the LORD, whether it be eating or drinking. “For you serve the Lord Christ!” (Colossians 3:24). Where you are serving is not the issue: in your church? You serve Christ; in your faculty? You serve Christ; in your department? You serve Christ; in your fel...
